Metapontum Agrobios was originally constituted in 1985 as a consortium between the Basilicata Region and ENI. Today it is a L.L.C. company owned by the Basilicata Region and Lucanian Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture (Agenzia Lucana per lo Sviluppo e l’Innovazione in Agricoltura, A.L.S.I.A.). Its primary activities involve the transfer of agricultural and agro-industrial innovations through scientific projects as well as analytical services in the plant biotechnological and environmental fields.
Current projects in the field of biotechnology involve the development and application of innovative technologies for the protection of crops from virus infection and insects, for the improvement of agricultural crops (tomato, wheat, oleaginous plants) and for the purification of value added product from plant species. Another active line of research is the use of molecular markers both for the identification of plant species and varieties as well as defining this technology for medical diagnostics in humans.
On the environmental front it is involved in monitoring programs throughout Basilicata (water, air, earth) and risk/safety evaluations in the use and release of GMO products.
In the analytical field, Agrobios is actively involved in the improvement and quality certification of agricultural products (fruit, vegetables, olive oil, honey), in phytosanitary diagnosis, and in the identification of GMO products in different matrices. |
