Metapontum Agrobios is a research centre established in 1985 as a partnership between Regione Basilicata and Enichem. Today the company is a partnership between Regione Basilicata Bioren S.p.A. and A.L.S.I.A. (Agenzia Lucana per lo Sviluppo e l’Innovazione in Agricoltura).
The company is devoted to research, development and technology transfer to agricultural and agroindustry system.
Metapontum Agrobios manages several important biotechnological projects aimed to obtain insects and virus resistant plants and improve quality of industrial and agronomic species.
Within a big project on bio-diversity, several molecular markers has been developed to identify and discriminate between agronomic varieties.
Metapontum Agrobios is also involved in projects to monitor, analyse and decontaminate polluted sites.
Furthermore is involved in biosafety programs aimed to evaluate the new varieties coming from biotechnological researches and the risks linked to the controlled release of GMO in the field.

The Research Centre is located in Southern Italy in the area of the ancient city of Metaponto, important town of "Magna Grecia", close to the Ionic sea.

The company has a staff of 62 researchers and 6 administrative employees.

 


In the Research Centre there are laboratories with molecular and cellular biology equipment, laboratories equipped with analytical chemistry facilities and an agronomic department with greenhouses and experimental fields.
Chemistry department is accredited by SINAL in compliance with ISO CEI EN /IEC 17025 standard. Cert. N° 0382.
Since 1999 Metapontum Agrobios has been accredited by Regione Basilicata as a “Laboratorio Fitosanitario” in compliance with D.M 14.4.97 with Delibera N° 1381. 
Metapontum Agrobios is also registered, since 1999, in  “ALBO dei laboratori di ricerca” art. 4 L. 46/82. (Decreto direttoriale N. 473; 27 september 1999) .

  

Metapontum Agrobios manages its research programs in close collaboration with other national and international research centres.
