Transgenic Plants
Potato plants, expressing high level of Bacillus thuringiensis toxin, have been obtained within the research program on biotic stress resistance. We produced some clones of cultivars Desiree and Nicola resistant to lepidopteran and some clon of cultivar Desiree resistant to coleopteran. With the same genes (cry3b) eggplants, cultivar Picentia, resistant to Colorado potato beetle, have been now available. Potato transgenic clones have been evaluated in field tests in 1995 and in 1997 in different areas located in Southern Italy, under the dictate of 90/220/EEC directive and related national laws. Potato plants, cultivar Desiree, resistant to Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) and to Potato Spindle Tuber Viroid (PSTVd) have been obtained by genetic transformation with PLRV "Coat Protein" gene and with PSTVd antisense RNA. Cucumber mosaic virus, resistant tomato plants were also produced and will be evaluated in field test.

Within environmental research program some expert systems have been developped:

  • SI.MUL.FER. (Multimedia Expert System on Citrus Fertilization).
  • FE.GRA. (Multimedia Expert System on Grape Fertilization).
  • PE.GRA. (Multimedia Expert System on Grape Protection).
  • O.PE.C. (Multimedia Expert System on Olive Protection).

All the multimedia systems produced during this program will be available on CD-ROM and online on the web.
